Artist Statement
Marietta Camillieri
My artistic practice integrates silk, fiber, and metal to explore the interplay of fluidity and structure. I am drawn to silk for its organic movement and the way dyes travel with both intention and unpredictability. Using Shibori, marbleizing, and various dye techniques, I create variable-scale compositions that reflect the beauty and complexity of the natural world, especially flowers and botanical forms.
As my work has evolved, metal has become an essential part of my vocabulary. I use metals such as steel, bronze, and aluminum to interact with the softness and translucence of the silk. The tension between the delicacy of the textile and the stability of the metal invites the viewer to consider themes of balance, resilience, and transformation.
My current direction includes developing freestanding sculptures and mixed-media installations where silk, metal, and woven textile elements merge into unified forms. These sculptural works allow me to push fiber art beyond the flat plane and into the realm of contemporary three-dimensional fine art.
I am committed to expanding perceptions of traditional fiber techniques by demonstrating their sophistication, emotional depth, and capacity for storytelling. My pieces often touch on environmental themes, collective emotion, and the desire to bring viewers moments of peace, joy, and connection.
Creating art is a way of documenting lived experience—capturing the beauty and fragility of our world in forms that future generations can experience. My goal is to continue developing multidimensional works that elevate fiber and metal into meaningful visual narratives.
